Mix Up Your Routine This Spring With These Outdoor Workouts

Spring is here and the weather is finally getting warmer, take advantage of the nicer weather by taking your workouts outdoors! Outdoor workouts are a great way to stay active while getting some fresh air and enjoying the natural beauty around you.

There are countless ways to get your heart pumping and your muscles moving while enjoying the great outdoors this spring. In fact, we have an entire list of outdoor workout ideas so you can enjoy exercising in the spring weather!

Hiking

Instead of walking on a treadmill for an hour, take it up a notch by hitting a hiking trail! Not only do you get the benefit of breathing in the fresh air, but you'll also benefit from the uneven terrain and walking up and down hills. The uneven terrain and hills will help get your heart rate up, burn calories, build strength in your legs, and give your body a new challenge than simply walking on a treadmill or pavement.

When choosing a hiking trail, look for one that matches your fitness level and offers scenic views. Start with an easy trail and gradually work your way up to more challenging routes. And don't forget to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen!

Play your favorite sport

One great way to get your body moving without doing a traditional workout is by playing a sport! Choose any sport you love, call up a few friends, and go out to have a good time. There are so many sports to choose from that are great workouts, such as volleyball, tennis, and basketball.

You can do this on a weekend when you want to skip the gym but still want to get some movement in and burn extra calories – while having fun!

Go on a bike ride

Cycling classes are increasingly popular nowadays, but instead of taking a class this spring, grab your bike and go on a ride outdoors! Cycling outdoors is a good way to explore new areas and enjoy the scenery all while improving your cardiovascular health, burning calories, and building leg strength.

When cycling, it’s important to wear a helmet and follow traffic laws. Start with a shorter route and gradually increase distance and intensity. And consider joining a cycling group or club for added motivation and support!

Hit the water

Swimming is not only a fun activity in the spring and summer, but it's also an underrated excellent outdoor workout! Swimming is a low-impact exercise which means anyone can do it and reap the benefits it provides, like strengthening your entire body, improving your lung capacity, burning a ton of calories. If you don't have a pool in your backyard, go to a public pool, or the beach, or even try the pool at the gym (although it's not technically outdoors, it's still a great workout).

When swimming, be sure to warm up before entering the water and stretch afterward to prevent injury. If you’re new to swimming, consider taking lessons to improve your technique and build endurance.

Try circuit training or HIIT

Circuit training and HIIT (high-intensity interval training) are very similar training styles that don't require any equipment and can easily be done anywhere outdoors. HIIT is fast-paced and requires you to be in constant motion, performing various high-intensity exercises like jump squats, and burpees, in short bursts with brief recovery periods. It often involves only 3-4 cardiovascular exercises and 30-45 seconds of high-intensity rounds.

Circuit training on the other hand, is a mixture of strength and cardiovascular exercises. The average circuit workout usually involves around 8-12 different workout stations where you work different muscle groups. You stay at each station for a longer period of time than HIIT rounds, usually between 1-2 minutes or even for a certain amount of reps.

You can easily do either of these workouts outdoors and select only bodyweight exercises or take a few pieces of equipment like a jump rope and resistance bands!

Go for a run at the beach

Running is a great outdoor workout, but you can take it up a notch by running right next to the ocean! If you live near the beach, take advantage of the natural environment for your workouts. Not only will you enjoy the nice, ocean breeze, but the sand will make your run 10x more difficult which results in burning more calories and giving your body a different challenge.

Take your workouts to your backyard or nearby park

An easy outdoor workout idea involves simply taking your usual workouts to your backyard or nearby park! You can have a few friends join you too to make it more motivating. All you need to do is take any equipment you usually use like a pair of dumbbells, jump rope, resistance band, etc, and do your workout outdoors!

In conclusion, there are many outdoor workouts to choose from, each with its own unique benefits. You don't have to work out outdoors all the time, but whenever you need a change of scenery or need something to shake up your usual routine, try one of the workout ideas mentioned above! Don't forget to stay hydrated, and take your favorite pre-workout or BCAA's in your shaker bottle to help pump you up for your workout!
